Dublin Culture Night at the RIAI – Architecture and the Moving Image – Call for Submissions

Following an open call for a curator for Culture Night at the RIAI this September 22nd, Stephen Mulhall – an architect and film maker based in Dublin – was selected. The theme for Culture Night at the RIAI will be ‘architecture and the moving image’. Film and video screenings will take place inside the RIAI’s Merrion Square headquarters from 5pm to 11pm.

This is an open call for submissions of moving image footage for Culture Night (film, video, animations, photography etc.) related to architecture and the built environment.

Who can apply
We welcome submissions from registered architects, architecture students and recent graduates in Ireland, along with practitioners in associated fields such as film, architectural photography, fine arts, design, architectural history, geography etc.

We plan to exhibit a variety of work that relates to architecture and the built environment. This may include documentaries and longer features, along with shorter pieces, experimental work, animation and stop-motion. The exhibition of sound installations will also be considered. Inside, the building work will be displayed on large, high resolution monitors. Submissions that are site specific are encouraged. Due to time and budget restrictions, the RIAI are not expecting original material produced for Culture Night and understand that existing material will be submitted.

We are also keen to receive submissions of moving imagery to be projected inside the building, possibly utilising existing window(s). These projections will be developed in conjunction with the
curator along with a technical specialist. This is an exciting opportunity to exhibit at a large scale, and potentially communicate to the public and the city through the RIAI’s front facade.

The final selection of work will be made by a panel, including representatives from the RIAI. Spaces for consideration include the ground floor (hallway, stairs and front Members’ Room) along with the Architecture Centre in the basement, and the two first floor Council Rooms. Plans are available, if required.

If you wish to visit the building to consider site-specific locations it is open to members of the public during weekdays 9-5pm. Details at riai.ie. Alternatively please contact Sonila Papa via spapa@riai.ie or (01) 669 1483 at the RIAI to arrange an appointment to visit.

Monitors and equipment, within reason, will be supplied for the event. There is no budget for producing new work. Due to the timeframes, existing work will be considered favourably.

Up to 1500 people visited the RIAI on Culture Night 2015. We believe this is an exciting opportunity to showcase work, and to communicate to the profession and the public the links between the disciplines of architecture and the moving image.
