Deansgrange Library will be officially re-launched by An Cathaoirleach Councillor Carrie Smyth on Wednesday 20th November at 6.30pm. The refurbishment of the library was led by Mairead Owens, County Librarian and Dun Laoghaoire Rathdown County Council Architects.
The refurbishment of Deansgrange Library is just the latest instalment in the County’s library building programme. This includes the re-opening of Dalkey Library with its popular Maeve Binchy Memorial Garden in 2012; the on-going refurbishment and rebuild of the Blackrock Library and VEC complex scheduled for completion in the spring of 2014 and the much anticipated opening of the new Central Library and Cultural Centre in Dún Laoghaire in autumn 2014.
Deansgrange Library, which is currently the busiest library in the dlr area, was originally opened in 1982. Over 110,000 people visited Deansgrange Library the last full year it was open and over 250,000 items were borrowed that year. The doors to the library closed last year to allow for a complete redesign and refurbishment of the building, which now offers its users an extensive menu of services and improved facilities.
The people of Deansgrange and the wider dlr Library community can now avail of a bright, spacious interior; enhanced public internet and self-service facilities and most importantly an extended selection of books, CDs and DVDs.
The new children’s library is proving to be extremely popular particularly after school and during weekends and the extra meeting room is now available to a wide variety of community groups.
dlr Libraries along with the Arts Office form part of the Architecture and Culture Department in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council. The county has eight branch libraries serving the educational and recreational needs of all who live, work or study in the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown area. Current library membership is 59,000 and continues to grow. 1.4 million books were issued last year.
