Mapped

mapped-2

‘MAPPED’ is a book and exhibition of research into planned villages in Ireland. Run as a research group over the last three years in the Dublin School of Architecture, DIT, it includes essays, maps and drawings of planned Irish villages from the 17th to the 20th century. This book collates three years research into Utopian planned villages (edited in 2015 as Utopia7), industrial and manufacturing villages (2016 Post-Industrial newspaper) and new research into planned estate villages.

The new work on estate villages focuses in detail on six villages- Doneraile Co. Cork, Ballyhaise, Co. Cavan, Abbeyleix Co. Laois , Mountbellew, Co. Galway, Tyrellspass, Co. Westmeath, and Cookstown Co. Tyrone. An essay is included on the morphology and history of each of these villages as well as detailed maps and axonometric drawings.

The team is currently producing a beautifully bound colour publication of approx. 120pages, with an overall A1 location map and timelines of all of the villages researched over the past three years. The completed book will be launched in early June and an associated exhibition will run in parallel.

‘MAPPED’ is an initiative of six fourth year Dublin School of Architecture students – Cian Burke, Cillian McGrath, Jason Ladrigan, Dumitru Cusnir, Michael Weir, David McCarthy and our tutor Miriam Delaney.
