Austrian company WIEHAG Timber Construction have supplied their stunning glued laminated timber, roofing and ceiling elements for many landmark architectural projects in Ireland including the recently completed Gibson Hotel by Scott Tallon Architects (see this issue) and the Limerick and Westmeath County Council offices as well as the Elm Park development (all by Bucholz McEvoy Architects). With 160 years experience, WIEHAG is one of Europe’s leading suppliers in the field of wide span load-bearing systems and entire roofs made out of timber. Glued laminated timber, roofing and ceiling elements, formwork, multilayer boards and acoustic elements are further competences. This traditional company, with the most cutting-edge manufacturing plant for timber engineering in Europe, employs over 300 staff and produces over 70,000 m3 glued laminated timber and 1.3 million m3 of panels every year. WIEHAG offers one-stop solutions for roofs including load-carrying structures as well as roof elements. The portfolio consists in constructional consulting and design, calculations, production, logistics and assembly including the roof cladding. Structural timber solutions by WIEHAG are economical and thus highly competitive, also in comparison with steel, concrete and reinforced concrete. “Our success is based on the combination of engineering skills, the most modern CNC-controlled production facility for glued laminated timber and a perfect organisation of the various projects”, says the company. WIEHAG has designed and erected many of the largest and most interesting timber buildings in Europe, including Sunderland Aquatic Centre, Exhibition Hall 11 in Frankfurt, and an Ice Mall in Israel. WIEHAG is currently manufacturing massive glulam beams for the Leisure Centre in Bangor (Belfast). With 1,500 m3 Bangor is presenting the biggest glulam project in the UK ever.
