RIAI launch consumer magazine house+design

johnjordanphotography-9382

On Saturday 4 June 2016, RIAI President Carole Pollard launched the RIAI’s new consumer magazine house + design at Bloom, Ireland’s largest garden festival. Published by Architecture Ireland Publications Ltd, house + design is Ireland’s only dedicated magazine for architect-designed homes and extensions.

Speaking at the launch, RIAI President Carole Pollard said: ‘The RIAI’s public role is to promote the value that architecture brings to society for everyone’s benefit and we are delighted to publish a new consumer magazine that gives voice to this remit. Architects add value to a home – no matter what size or budget. An architect does a lot more than just provide a set of drawings, they will help set a viable brief and budget, guide through the planning process, obtain quotes for the work, manage consultants like surveyors and engineers, monitor the budget and administer the construction contract. An architect can help realise the hidden potential of a home.’

Theme of Issue no. 1: Be creative with your home

For issue no.1, summer 2016, house + design features 14 great houses for every size and budget – all designed by Irish architects and with useful advice on how to maximise the potential of a home. Projects range from small extensions with big impacts to beautifully restored period houses. We also feature great houses in great Irish landscape settings – from the hills to the coast – and visit a stylish loft conversion in New York city designed by an Irish architect. The magazine provides practical advice from registered architects on topics such as energy-efficiency measures in the home, working with an architect, and how to get the most out of your home.

Following 10 seasons as Ireland’s TV Architect, Dermot Bannon discusses if our ambitions for our homes have changed over the past decade and what we love in our homes. Dermot also reveals what inspired him to become an architect and where he continues to find ideas.

Our outdoor spaces are hugely important and house + design features six stunning garden designs to suit different requirements – whether it’s a family garden or a small urban patch that can be turned into an outdoor pantry. We also visit June Blake’s stunning garden in County Wicklow, which features award-winning restored buildings.

house + design have compiled a comprehensive Design Locator on stylish furniture and home accessories as well as a useful guide to the best building products. We feature a selection of the best of Irish design, which is having huge success on the international design circuit, following Ireland’s Year of Design, ID2015.

Coinciding with the launch of the publication is the new website housedesign.ie which will be updated regularly with expert tips and design advice. For media queries and complimentary media copies, please contact the Editor, Dr. Sandra O’Connell, at soconnell@riai.ie or 01 6761703.
