The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI) are delighted to present the town of Westport as their next public Walk+Talk. It is 250 years since an ad was placed in 1767 in the Dublin Faulkner’s Journal advertising for tradesmen to build the town of Westport to plans associated with Mr. William Leeson Esq. To mark this occasion MRIAI Simon Wall Town Architect to Westport will deliver an illustrated talk and guided walk of Westport, covering the town’s urban regeneration over the past two decades, during which it has experienced it largest building programme since Georgian times.
During this period the town has won many accolades including: three national Tidy Towns wins, and was in 2012 assessed by The Irish Times to be ‘The Best Place to Live in Ireland’. Its most recent public realm space and associated sculpture is the current national winner of the RIAI Public Choice Award.
Westport has been designated a national ‘Smarter Travel’ demonstration town, through competition, by the Department of Transport Tourism and Sport, this has entailed a cycling infrastructural spend of €5 million over a 5 year period, linking 70% of its residential areas with an independent urban greenway network. The town is also a pioneer in the development of and rural greenways, including the international award winning 45km Great Western Greenway linking the town to Achill Island.
Simon will give an illustrated 40m talk on Westport’s holistic community approach to Town Planning and Heritage over the past two decades, in the towns newly completed seat Town Hall Theatre overlooking the Octagon. The theatre a €3M civic facility was delivered for the town by a local community investment company. This positive illustrated talk will inspire and engage with communities and professionals alike who are interested in the successful urban regeneration of rural Irish towns.
The talk will be followed by an optional 1.5 hour walking tour of the town and harbour area. Participants can attend either or both Talk and Walk.
