Throughout this spring, the RIAI is rolling-out a nationwide programme of Walks and Talks to celebrate Irish architecture. Architects will give free building tours and talks for the public.
First up is Presentation College Bray by Paul Keogh Architects – Winner of ‘Best Educational Building’ in the Irish Architecture Awards – on Saturday 1 February, 2pm.
All events are free but booking is required.
Peter Carroll reviewed Presentation College Bray in Architecture Ireland (AI 265)
“Like all of the practice’s work this school is clearly very well made and executed. There is a concern for details made simply and carefully. A matter-of-fact directness prevails: the skilful handling of an economy of means; the pragmatic plan; the forthright treatment of façades; the manipulation of the section for light and space. Walking about one happens upon very special moments. It is the in-between spaces, between the new buildings, between classrooms in corridors where true delight is to be found. Reflected light from the top of the skewered glazed light-wells throw light in mysterious ways deep into corridors. Satisfyingly wide stairwells offer breathtaking views into the distance. A number of inset inglenooks in corridors comfortably gather students wishing to chat. An external stairwell to staff facilities allows views over the basketball courts to the rear. A clear view through pastoral rooms at the end of corridors draws one invitingly towards the rugby pitch.”
